Penn State Students Find Comfort in 'Ask A Mom' Initiative
On the Penn State campus, Lori Rose and Sue Jackson have established a welcoming space for students seeking advice and comfort. For four years, these local moms have been offering support to students, often accompanied by homemade baked goods and their dog, Daisy.
Rose and Jackson began their initiative during the latter part of the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to provide a friendly face for students feeling isolated. Their approach has resonated with many, leading to repeat visits from students who appreciate the guidance they offer.
Both women have personal connections to the student experience, with Rose recalling how her daughter’s friends often lacked maternal support. Their goal is not to replace parental figures but to create a space where students can feel heard and supported. As long as students continue to seek them out, Rose and Jackson plan to remain a comforting presence on campus.
