Penn State Women's Hockey Freshman Class Making Immediate Impact
The Penn State women's hockey team is experiencing a strong influence from its freshman class during the 2026-27 season. The Nittany Lions welcomed seven first-year players, all of whom have quickly become essential contributors, helping the team secure five wins in their last six games.
Goaltender Morgan Stickney has been particularly impressive, earning the AHA Rookie of the Week award twice. She achieved this recognition after a remarkable 44-save debut against Ohio State and an 18-save shutout in a series sweep against Lindenwood. First-year forward Sofia Ismael is also making headlines, leading all rookies nationally with six goals and ranking second in assists and points.
Other freshmen, including Kylie Amelkovich and Megan Hosman, have also made notable contributions, with Amelkovich scoring two goals in a recent game and Hosman providing strong defensive support. Head coach Jeff Kampersal has acknowledged the challenges of transitioning to college hockey but noted that the freshmen have risen to the occasion. The team will continue to depend on these newcomers as they prepare for upcoming road games against St. Lawrence, RIT, and Mercyhurst.
