Peres Jepchirchir Faces Provisional Suspension After EPO Test Result
Peres Jepchirchir, the reigning world champion and former Olympic champion, has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) after an out-of-competition sample tested positive for EPO. The sample was collected in Kenya before her victory at the Sydney Marathon on August 30.
The AIU's announcement on October 23 does not constitute a final ruling on Jepchirchir's alleged anti-doping violation, as the case will undergo a formal process. Jepchirchir has a notable history in athletics, having won Olympic gold in the marathon at the 2021 Tokyo Games and the world marathon championship in 2023, along with multiple world half-marathon titles and three world records.
In response to the situation, Sydney Marathon organizers reaffirmed their commitment to clean sport and emphasized the importance of fair competition. They have invested in increased out-of-competition testing in collaboration with the AIU. The World Marathon Majors also highlighted that if Jepchirchir is found guilty of a doping offense, she could face a lifetime ban from their events and be ineligible for prize money and points.
