Peta Mullens Criticizes UCI for Last-Minute Rule Change Ahead of Gravel World Championships
Peta Mullens, a former Australian cycling champion, has voiced her discontent with the UCI following a sudden rule change just before the gravel world championships in Nannup. Mullens, who had planned to compete in the 35 to 39 age category, received an email from the UCI 48 hours before the race informing her that she would be moved to the elite field due to her accumulation of UCI points from a race held 14 months prior.
Mullens had previously confirmed her eligibility for the age group event after consulting the UCI, which had assured her that points from other cycling disciplines would not affect her status. However, a week before the championship, the UCI altered its regulations, stating that any athlete with elite UCI points must compete in the elite category.
The change has not only affected Mullens but also twelve other riders, some of whom traveled from Europe. Despite her efforts to negotiate with UCI representatives, Mullens feels her concerns have been ignored. As she prepares to compete in the elite field, she emphasizes that the timing of the rule change is unjust, especially after athletes have invested significant resources to qualify for the event.
