PGA Tour Introduces New Match Play Championship Series
The PGA Tour has announced a new match play Championship Series that will debut in 2028, marking the end of the FedEx Cup playoffs. This announcement was made by PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp ahead of the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club, which will host its final FedEx Cup events this year and next.
The new playoff format will feature the top 90 players competing in a two-week series, with the top 32 advancing to the Tour Championship. The first week will consist of group stages, while the second week will see the remaining players engage in head-to-head match play.
Rolapp addressed the uncertain future of LIV Golf, noting that there are currently no plans for players from that league to return to the PGA Tour. He emphasized the importance of accountability and meritocracy within the Tour, while also mentioning that the criteria for new venues will focus on challenging championship courses. The PGA Tour aims to create a unique competitive format that tests the best golfers in a different way.
