Phil Maton Diagnosed with Partial Tear in Patellar Tendon

Phil Maton, a setup man for the Chicago Cubs, has been diagnosed with a partial tear of the patellar tendon in his right knee, as reported by Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune. This diagnosis comes after Maton has spent time on the injured list three times this season due to what was initially labeled as tendinitis.

Approximately three weeks ago, Maton received a platelet-rich plasma injection, but it remains uncertain if he will return to play this season. The Cubs are expected to make a decision regarding his status later this month. Maton has pitched only 27 2/3 innings this season, recording a 6.18 ERA, with a notable drop in his strikeout rate and an increase in his walk rate.

Maton signed a two-year, $14.5 million contract with the Cubs during the offseason, marking a significant investment in a reliever by the team. The Cubs have faced numerous injuries within their bullpen this season, with Maton being one of eight relievers currently on the injured list. The team has made some additions to their bullpen but remains focused on addressing injuries affecting their pitching staff.
