Philippine Authorities Face Long Process to Identify Ferry Fire Victims

Authorities in the Philippines announced that it may take weeks or even months to identify the victims of a ferry fire that claimed 76 lives. The incident occurred on the MV June Aster, which was nearing Coron from Manila when it caught fire, carrying over 130 passengers.

Forensic experts are currently collecting DNA samples from the remains, which are in various conditions, with some found together and others scattered throughout the vessel. The Philippine Coast Guard reported that 41 additional remains were recovered, raising the death toll, while 13 individuals remain unaccounted for.

Investigators are still working to determine the fire's origin, having only recently accessed parts of the ferry after extinguishing the blaze. Survivor accounts mention two explosions before the fire erupted. The ship's owner is cooperating with the investigation and providing support to the victims' families.
