Phillies Confirm Don Mattingly as Permanent Manager with Two-Year Contract
The Philadelphia Phillies have announced the promotion of Don Mattingly from interim to permanent manager, securing him with a two-year contract. This decision comes despite a late-season performance that nearly jeopardized the team's playoff chances.
Mattingly took over as manager in late April, leading the team to a 79-55 record and a postseason appearance after replacing Rob Thomson, who was dismissed after a poor start to the season. The Phillies faced a challenging end to the regular season, almost losing a wild-card spot before being eliminated by the Atlanta Braves in the NL Wild Card Series.
Before Mattingly's promotion, the Phillies attempted to recruit former Red Sox manager Alex Cora but were unsuccessful. Mattingly, who previously served as a bench coach, is seen as a stable choice to manage a roster featuring notable players like Bryce Harper and Trea Turner. The team president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski, is expected to address the media alongside Mattingly soon.
