Phillies Confirm Trea Turner Will Start at Shortstop for 2027 Season
Trea Turner is set to return as the Philadelphia Phillies' shortstop for the 2027 MLB season, as confirmed by president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. Dombrowski emphasized that Turner must enhance his defensive skills to maintain his position.
Turner, who struggled significantly in 2026, recorded a batting average of .242 with 21 errors and poor defensive metrics. Dombrowski noted that Turner is aware of the need for improvement, stating that he cannot perform at the same level as last season.
In addition to Turner's situation, Dombrowski announced that Bryce Harper will transition back to first base. The Phillies also re-signed lefty reliever Tim Mayza and appointed former Mets manager Carlos Mendoza as their new infield coach. The team finished the 2026 season with an 88-74 record, securing a wild-card spot but losing in the playoffs.
