Phillies Designate Backup Catcher Garrett Stubbs for Assignment
Garrett Stubbs has been designated for assignment by the Philadelphia Phillies, as reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer. This decision adds him to the list of potential free agents for the team.
The Phillies now have the option to trade Stubbs or place him on waivers. If he clears waivers, he will become a free agent. Stubbs has expressed his intention to continue playing next year.
This is not the first instance of Stubbs being designated for assignment; he was DFA’d prior to the previous season after not making the team. He cleared waivers then and accepted an assignment to Triple-A Lehigh Valley before returning to the major league roster on April 22 due to an injury to J.T. Realmuto. Stubbs has been with the Phillies since 2022 and serves as the team’s union representative for the Major League Players Association.
