Phillies Designate Garrett Stubbs for Assignment
The Philadelphia Phillies have announced that catcher Garrett Stubbs is being designated for assignment as part of their strategy to lessen J.T. Realmuto's playing time. The team has five days to either trade Stubbs or place him on waivers following this decision.
This move concludes Stubbs' five-year association with the Phillies, during which he served primarily as a backup catcher after being acquired from the Astros in a minor trade prior to the 2021-22 season. In recent years, he has dropped to third on the catching depth chart, with Rafael Marchán taking over the reserve role.
Stubbs had limited playing time this season, appearing in 35 games and starting 17, while posting a batting average of .153. His overall performance with the Phillies includes a .212/.292/.300 slash line across 181 games. The team is expected to seek a more reliable backup catcher to support Realmuto, who has struggled this season and is under contract for two more years.
