Phillies Discuss Potential Deal with Nestor Cortes and Rotation Strategy
The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly nearing a deal with left-handed pitcher Nestor Cortes, a former All-Star with the Yankees who has not played this season due to arm surgery. The agreement is expected to be a big-league contract, although the specifics of Cortes' role and his return date remain uncertain.
Interim manager Don Mattingly refrained from discussing Cortes in detail, noting that no official agreement has been reached. Cortes, who struggled last season with a 6.29 ERA in eight starts, recently showcased his pitching skills for scouts. The Phillies may consider using him as a starter, in the bullpen, or as a swingman depending on his readiness.
Mattingly expressed reservations about implementing a six-man rotation, despite the team having five established starters. The Phillies currently hold the second National League Wild Card spot. Additionally, rookie Alex McFarlane has been called up and contributed to the bullpen, although he has faced challenges with first-batter walks. Left-hander Tanner Banks is also working towards a return from the injured list.
