Phillies Face Infield Challenges Ahead of 2027 Season
The Philadelphia Phillies are reassessing their infield setup for the 2027 season after a series of changes made during the trade deadline. The team shifted Bryson Stott to third base, Alec Bohm to first base, and Bryce Harper to right field to accommodate Luis Arraez, while Trea Turner remained at shortstop.
Despite these adjustments, Arraez struggled in Philadelphia, leading to his absence from the Wild Card Series due to an ankle injury. In the first round against Atlanta, Stott returned to second base, and Edmundo Sosa took over at third. Looking ahead, Arraez, Bohm, and Sosa are set to hit free agency, prompting President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski to suggest that Harper may return to first base, with Kyle Schwarber also potentially seeing time there.
Turner is expected to start at shortstop, although his defensive performance has raised concerns. He led the league in errors and had a poor overall season, prompting discussions about his future at the position. The Phillies may need to seek external options to bolster their infield, especially if they do not retain Bohm or Arraez. The team has struggled defensively in recent years, finishing low in defensive metrics, which new manager Don Mattingly aims to address this offseason.
