Phillies Place Jesús Luzardo on Injured List Due to Shoulder Inflammation

The Philadelphia Phillies have placed All-Star left-hander Jesús Luzardo on the 15-day injured list as of Tuesday, following his removal from a start against Atlanta due to left shoulder inflammation.

This decision is retroactive to Saturday, and Luzardo is eligible to return on September 27, the last day of the regular season. An MRI conducted on Saturday revealed no serious issues, but Luzardo did not throw on Sunday or Monday. Interim manager Don Mattingly indicated that while Luzardo showed improvement, he was not yet at the desired level of readiness.

Luzardo's absence is significant as the Phillies aim to secure a playoff spot, currently holding the second National League wild card position. Luzardo has a record of 14-5 with a 2.87 ERA and ranks second in the NL with 221 strikeouts this season. In response to his injury, the team recalled right-hander Grant Holman from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
