Phillies Recall Alan Rangel as Bullpen Struggles Continue

PHILADELPHIA — Following a challenging game against the Blue Jays, the Philadelphia Phillies have made a roster change by recalling right-hander Alan Rangel to support their strained bullpen. Chase Shugart, who allowed a game-winning home run in the 11th inning, was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley after throwing 39 pitches in the loss.

Rangel, who has previously served as a long reliever for the team, has a 5.40 ERA over 23 1/3 innings in the major leagues this season. The Phillies have faced heavy bullpen usage recently, particularly after starters Andrew Painter and Aaron Nola exited their last games early due to injury concerns.

Interim manager Don Mattingly indicated that Rangel could be relied upon for multiple innings if necessary, especially since the team has played two extra-inning games in the last four. The Phillies' bullpen has recorded a combined 4.40 ERA this season and has pitched 24 2/3 innings since August 3, ranking among the highest in the league during that period.
