Phillies Release Minor-League Pitcher Jean Cabrera Amid Struggles

The Philadelphia Phillies have announced the release of Jean Cabrera, a right-handed pitcher who previously earned the Paul Owens Award in 2021. The decision comes amid a difficult season for the team, as Cabrera struggled with a 7.64 ERA over 21 minor-league appearances in 2026.

Cabrera, who joined the Phillies as an international free agent in 2019, made his professional debut in 2021, showcasing promise with a 1.54 ERA in the Dominican Summer League. He received the Paul Owens Award alongside Bryson Stott for his performance in the Phillies' system.

After being added to the 40-man roster post-2024 season, Cabrera faced challenges in 2026, starting with a 9.32 ERA in Triple-A before being demoted to Double-A. Following a series of struggles, including 44 walks in 88 1/3 innings, the organization opted to release him, and he is now a free agent.
