Phillies Sign Nestor Cortes to Strengthen Starting Rotation
The Philadelphia Phillies have bolstered their starting rotation by signing left-handed pitcher Nestor Cortes to a major league contract. This move comes as the team seeks to improve performance in the back half of their rotation, which has faced challenges with Aaron Nola and Andrew Painter.
Cortes, who last played for the San Diego Padres before undergoing bicep surgery in October, had a difficult season prior, recording a 6.29 ERA over eight games. His best performance came in 2022, where he achieved a 12-4 record with a 2.44 ERA. Given his long absence from the mound, the Phillies are expected to gradually integrate him into the rotation.
Painter, initially anticipated to be a significant contributor in his rookie season, has struggled with a 6.43 ERA in 18 games. Following a stint in Triple-A, he has allowed 10 runs in 20 1/3 innings since his recall, raising concerns about his effectiveness. If Cortes proves to be a reliable option, Painter may transition to a bullpen role for the remainder of the season.
