Pirates Add Christian Bethancourt to Roster
The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced the selection of catcher Christian Bethancourt's contract. This move comes as the team also recalled pitcher Brandon Eisert, while catcher Endy Rodriguez has been placed on the 60-day injured list following hip surgery.
Bethancourt, 34, was acquired from the New York Yankees in mid-August and has not yet played for the Pirates' Triple-A affiliate, spending his time on the major league taxi squad. This season, he has recorded a .270 batting average with 14 home runs across 249 plate appearances in Triple-A with the Cubs and Yankees.
Throughout his eight seasons in Major League Baseball, Bethancourt has played for several teams, including the Braves and Padres, and has a career batting average of .229. His addition comes as the Pirates seek stability in their catching position, which has seen numerous changes in recent years.
