Pirates Sign Catcher Jose Herrera to Minor League Deal

The Pittsburgh Pirates have reached an agreement with catcher Jose Herrera on a minor league contract, as confirmed by the MLB.com transaction log. He will be assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis.

This season, Herrera has not played in the majors. He initially signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers during the offseason and spent the first half of the year with their top affiliate in Round Rock, where he recorded a batting average of .229 with two home runs over 40 games. After being released by the Rangers around the All-Star Break, he briefly played in the Mexican League before joining the Pirates.

Herrera has experience from four seasons in the major leagues, primarily with the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he played from 2014 until last season. Throughout his career, he has struggled offensively, posting a .200 batting average across 562 plate appearances. The Pirates recently lost catcher Endy Rodríguez to hip surgery and currently have three catchers on their MLB roster, including Christian Bethancourt, Rafael Flores Jr., and Henry Davis. With limited experience among their other catchers in the organization, Herrera brings additional depth to the team.
