Pirates Trade for Catcher Christian Bethancourt from Yankees
The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired catcher Christian Bethancourt from the New York Yankees for cash considerations, as confirmed by both teams. This trade is permissible after the deadline since Bethancourt's contract was not selected for the 40-man roster.
Following the trade, Bethancourt has been assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis but is anticipated to join the Pirates' taxi squad in Los Angeles this weekend. The 34-year-old has spent this season in the minors, previously playing for the Cubs before signing with the Yankees.
With Endy Rodríguez on the injured list due to hip inflammation, the Pirates currently have Henry Davis and Rafael Flores as their catching options. The team may consider adding Bethancourt to the roster, potentially leading to a three-catcher setup, although both Davis and Flores could also be sent to the minors if necessary.
