Pope Leo to Undergo Surgery for Lung Growth
Pope Leo revealed on Sunday that a recent health examination identified a small growth on his lung, prompting him to schedule surgery for this week. This marks the first health concern during his papacy, which began in May 2025.
During his address to pilgrims in St. Peter's Square, the pope described the growth as localized and well-contained, having been detected early. The Vatican has not confirmed whether the nodule is malignant.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her support for the pope as he prepares for the procedure, which is expected to require about a week for recovery. Despite this health issue, Pope Leo is scheduled for an 11-day tour of South America starting November 6.
