Post-Trade Deadline Player Acquisition in MLB
The MLB trade deadline has passed, but teams still have opportunities to add players. While numerous trades occurred before the deadline, some additional trades may happen in the coming weeks.
After the deadline, teams can acquire players through waivers or free agency, although options are limited. The previous August waiver trade system, which allowed significant player trades, was eliminated in 2019, restricting the pool of tradeable players. Current eligible players include those in the minors, such as Dan Altavilla and Cavan Biggio.
Teams can also coordinate waiver claims as a means to manage salaries. Free agency remains an option, but the available talent is not particularly strong at this time. Players like Nick Castellanos and Lance McCullers Jr. are among those currently available. A crucial deadline for postseason eligibility is set for August 31, requiring players to be in an organization by that time to qualify for playoff rosters.
