Potential Moves for ACC Schools Amid Conference Realignment

The recent settlement between the ACC and Clemson and Florida State has created opportunities for member schools to consider leaving the conference. Departing schools after the 2029-30 academic year would owe $75 million and regain control of their media rights, a significant reduction from previous exit fees.

Florida State and Clemson are likely candidates for the SEC, given their strong football programs and existing rivalries. However, the SEC may hesitate to add more schools from states where it already has members. If the SEC declines, the Big Ten could be a viable alternative for both.

North Carolina and Virginia also have potential options, with North Carolina being particularly attractive due to its basketball brand and academic reputation. The Big Ten may pursue both schools to expand its reach on the East Coast. Miami and Georgia Tech could also be considered for the Big Ten, while schools like Virginia Tech, NC State, Louisville, and Pitt might look to the Big 12 for opportunities. Despite these discussions, the ACC remains intact until at least June 2027, with a media agreement in place until 2036.
