Poulter and Garcia's Ryder Cup Captaincy Aspirations End Due to 2017 Rule
Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia, who joined LIV Golf in 2022, are now ineligible to serve as captains for the European Ryder Cup team due to a rule established in 2017. This regulation prohibits players from taking on captaincy roles if they decline membership in the European Tour or fail to meet minimum event obligations.
Prior to their move to LIV Golf, Poulter was considered a candidate for the 2025 Ryder Cup captaincy at Bethpage Black, while Garcia was seen as a potential captain for the 2031 event in Spain. However, their decision to leave the DP World Tour and PGA Tour has resulted in them forfeiting these opportunities.
Despite plans to exit LIV Golf, Poulter, Garcia, and fellow player Lee Westwood remain banned from captaincy roles. The rule they violated was implemented long before the emergence of LIV Golf, and it appears unlikely that any changes will be made to allow their eligibility in the future.
