Preferred Site for River Mersey Tidal Power Project Announced
The preferred site for a tidal power project on the River Mersey has been announced, focusing on a 1.5 mile stretch between Bromborough and Otterspool. This initiative has been a long-standing goal of Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram, who aims to utilize the river's energy.
The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority is set to consider the proposed location on November 6. Before construction can commence, a Development Consent Order must be secured along with necessary funding. The tidal power scheme has been under discussion since 2005 but was paused in 2011 due to profitability concerns.
Revived in 2017, the project received £2.5 million in funding in 2020. Rotheram highlighted that the scheme could produce up to one gigawatt of green electricity over 120 years and aid in safeguarding local infrastructure against rising sea levels.
