Prem Rugby Focuses on English Expansion, Dismisses Anglo-Welsh League Talks
Prem Rugby and the Rugby Football Union (RFU) have announced their intention to expand the English top-flight league by adding two English clubs by 2029, dismissing the possibility of including Welsh teams. This decision follows interest expressed by the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) in forming an Anglo-Welsh league.
The current structure of the league has been reduced to ten teams after the folding of Wasps, Worcester, and London Irish during the 2022-23 season. Starting from the 2026-27 season, traditional promotion and relegation will be replaced by a system where clubs must apply to join the league, meeting specific criteria related to performance, finances, and infrastructure.
While the WRU has indicated a desire to explore opportunities in the English club game, English rugby officials have confirmed that no negotiations are currently underway. The WRU has stated its commitment to maintaining four professional teams in the United Rugby Championship until at least the end of the 2027-28 season, while also reviewing future competition opportunities.
