Proper Use of Paddles Enhances Swimming Performance
Swimming, an integral part of triathlon, can be enhanced with various tools, including hand paddles. While these paddles are effective training aids that can boost swimming performance, improper use may lead to injuries by exacerbating flaws in a swimmer's stroke.
David Peters, a former member of the German national swim team and current coach, emphasizes the importance of mastering stroke mechanics before incorporating paddles. He advises against new swimmers using paddles immediately, as the added resistance can strain shoulders if their technique is not sound.
Peters suggests that paddles should be introduced to intermediate swimmers who have developed good stroke mechanics. He highlights that smaller paddles are preferable for beginners, allowing them to gradually build strength without excessive strain. Proper technique and breathing patterns are crucial during paddle workouts to maximize benefits while minimizing injury risk.
