Prosecutors Seek Jail Time for Nicky Winmar Following Assault Conviction
Nicky Winmar, a former AFL player, is facing sentencing after being convicted of assaulting a woman in Cohuna, Victoria, last year. Prosecutors have requested that he be jailed for the attack, which has left the victim suffering from severe emotional and physical distress.
The court heard that the assault involved Winmar smashing the woman's head against a door and pulling her hair, resulting in significant harm. The victim described feeling like a shadow of her former self, experiencing extreme pain and ongoing mental health issues as a result of the incident.
During the proceedings, the magistrate has yet to decide on the sentence, with a date set for August 28. Winmar's defense argued against jail time, suggesting a community corrections order would be more suitable. Winmar has a history of violence, including prior convictions, which the prosecution highlighted as a reason for a harsher penalty.
