Protests Erupt in Kyiv Over Defence Minister's Dismissal

On July 31, several thousand Ukrainians gathered in central Kyiv to protest President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's decision to dismiss Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. The rally highlighted strong public opposition to the removal of Fedorov, who had been in charge of the ministry since January and was recognized for his role in military innovation during the ongoing conflict with Russia.

The protests were sparked by a government reshuffle in mid-July, which many viewed as poorly explained. Fedorov's dismissal followed a reported conflict with the then commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, who was also removed shortly after. Speculation suggested that Fedorov's ousting was linked to his efforts to address alleged corruption within the defence sector.

Demonstrators marched through Kyiv's historical center, emphasizing the need for technological modernization in Ukraine's military. Despite the protests, President Zelenskiy has not indicated plans to reverse his decision, appointing Yevhenii Khmara as the acting defence minister. Analysts suggest that effective crisis management is crucial for restoring public trust, as the protests reflect broader concerns about governance and the war effort against Russia.
