Publicly Owned Buses Launch in Merseyside
The first publicly owned buses in Merseyside have started operating in St Helens, representing a major transformation in the region's public transport system.
The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority announced the introduction of locally-run bus services, which they describe as the most significant change in over a generation. New routes include the X3 Express service to Liverpool John Lennon Airport and an early morning express to Southport.
Improvements include larger buses on certain routes and enhanced access to Edge Hill University and Ormskirk, along with better connections to local hospitals. Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram emphasized that public control will enhance accountability and governance, with performance data to be regularly published and public feedback mechanisms established. Buses and Merseyrail trains will feature the 'Metro' branding, although an official brand name has yet to be confirmed.
