Putin Claims Ukraine Has Opened 'Pandora's Box' with Economic Strikes
On August 22, Russian President Vladimir Putin remarked that Ukraine's recent drone strikes on Russian economic targets have opened a 'Pandora's box', indicating that Russia will retaliate against Ukraine's most vulnerable economic sectors.
This summer, Ukraine intensified its drone campaign aimed at Russian infrastructure, including oil refineries and warehouses, which Ukraine claims are vital to Russia's military efforts.
Putin asserted that while Ukraine's actions have threatened its agricultural exports, they would not lead to global food shortages, as Russia could compensate for the loss of Ukrainian exports. He also noted that Russia had previously participated in a Turkish-brokered agreement to safeguard grain exports in the Black Sea, but withdrew from this arrangement in 2023. Additionally, he reiterated Russia's willingness to engage in peace talks, contingent on the current realities rather than what he described as unrealistic proposals from Ukraine.
