Raiders Coach Considers Starting Fernando Mendoza Amid Struggles
The Las Vegas Raiders, who selected Fernando Mendoza first overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, have yet to allow him to start a game. Instead, they have relied on veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins, who has started every match this season.
Following a 21-35 defeat to the Los Angeles Rams, head coach Klint Kubiak indicated that he would review game footage and consider all options, including the possibility of starting Mendoza. The Raiders currently hold a 3-4 record and are looking to improve their performance, particularly in critical game situations.
Cousins has thrown for 295 yards and two touchdowns in the recent loss, but he was also sacked twice, contributing to the team's struggles. The Raiders view Mendoza as their future quarterback and are cautious about placing him in a challenging situation too soon, similar to the approach taken by the Chiefs with Patrick Mahomes during his rookie season.
