Raiders GM Discusses Quarterback Development Plans
Las Vegas Raiders general manager John Spytek recently addressed the team's quarterback situation, particularly regarding rookie Fernando Mendoza and veteran Kirk Cousins. His remarks came after speculation from ESPN's Adam Schefter about a potential switch to Mendoza sooner than expected.
Spytek emphasized Mendoza's strong work ethic and commitment, stating that while Mendoza has shown promise, he must earn the starting position through consistent performance. In his preseason debut against the Arizona Cardinals, Mendoza completed 10 of 16 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown. However, his subsequent performances against the Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers were less impressive, with multiple interceptions.
Spytek also noted that there is no single method for developing quarterbacks, referencing successful players like Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes, who benefited from time as backups. He indicated that Mendoza may not start until later in the season, aligning with ESPN's analysis that he might not see game action before November.
