Raiders' Klint Kubiak Discusses Quarterback Competition
During the preseason game between the Las Vegas Raiders and the Houston Texans, reports suggested that Kirk Cousins was set to be the starting quarterback for Week 1, despite rookie Fernando Mendoza's earlier struggles.
After the Raiders' 22-20 victory, head coach Klint Kubiak stated that the competition for the starting role is ongoing, emphasizing that no player should feel secure in their position. Cousins did not play in the game, which some interpreted as a sign of his lead in the depth chart, while Mendoza completed 8 of 15 passes for 86 yards, including an interception returned for a touchdown.
Kubiak acknowledged that Mendoza has areas to improve and that the coaching staff has a role in his development. The status of Cousins for the upcoming preseason finale against the San Francisco 49ers remains uncertain, but he is expected to start the regular season opener against the Miami Dolphins if healthy.
