Raiders Maintain Kirk Cousins as Starting QB Despite Fernando Mendoza's Practice Performance
During a joint practice with the Houston Texans, Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak assigned rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza some first-team responsibilities, raising questions about the team's quarterback situation.
Despite Mendoza's involvement, reports indicate that Kirk Cousins remains the planned starter for the upcoming season. NFL reporter Ian Rapoport confirmed that the organization has consistently communicated this intention, with Mendoza expected to serve as a backup. In their preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals, Cousins completed five of six passes for 50 yards, while Mendoza had 10 completions on 16 attempts for 97 yards and a touchdown.
Both quarterbacks faced challenges during practice, including a costly interception. Mendoza acknowledged the importance of learning from the experience and is anticipated to receive significant playing time in the upcoming game against the Texans and the preseason finale against the San Francisco 49ers.
