Rare Humpback Whale Birth Filmed by Drone in Australia
On July 28, a drone operator in Australia filmed the birth of a humpback whale, an event that has only been documented three times previously and never from a drone. This rare occurrence took place during the whales' migration along the east coast of Australia from Antarctica to warmer waters.
Alexander Forrest, the drone operator, recorded the moment shortly after changing his drone battery. He witnessed the whale surface, followed by a plume of blood, and then saw the newborn calf take its first breath. Initially concerned, he soon realized the mother was simply reuniting with her calf after the birth.
Forrest, along with two other drone operators from the Organization for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA), continued filming for several hours. Their footage captured the calf's early life, including its first dives and interactions with other humpback whales. This documentation is significant for scientific research, as it provides valuable insights into humpback whale reproduction and maternal behavior, marking a notable contribution to the understanding of these marine mammals.
