Rays Designate Steven Wilson for Assignment After Injury Recovery
The Tampa Bay Rays have designated reliever Steven Wilson for assignment after activating him from the 60-day injured list. This decision comes as Wilson has not yet pitched in an MLB game while wearing a Rays uniform.
Wilson was acquired from the Chicago White Sox in a trade that included Yoendrys Gómez during the winter. Following the trade, Gómez was designated for assignment and subsequently traded to the Minnesota Twins. Wilson has been sidelined this season due to lumbar disc inflammation, which he reported during Spring Training. He began a minor league rehabilitation assignment on July 10, making several appearances before being designated.
In his time with Triple-A Durham, Wilson has recorded a scoreless inning in six of seven outings, although his strikeout rate has been low. The Rays' decision to designate him for assignment comes as they needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. If Wilson goes unclaimed, he may remain with Durham, but opting for free agency would mean forfeiting his remaining salary.
