Rays Designate Trevor Martin for Assignment
The Tampa Bay Rays have designated pitcher Trevor Martin for assignment as part of roster changes following the signing of infielder Jorge Mateo and the recall of right-hander Jesse Scholtens.
To accommodate these moves, infielder Carson Williams and right-hander Michael Grove were optioned to Triple-A Durham. Martin, who was added to the Rays' 40-man roster in April, has made six appearances in the majors this season, pitching 11 1/3 innings and allowing five earned runs. In Triple-A, he has a 3.09 earned run average over 43 2/3 innings.
Martin was ranked as the 40th prospect in the Rays' system by FanGraphs in June, noted for his mid-90s fastball and secondary pitches. Following the trade deadline, he will be placed on waivers, and given his performance and options, it is likely he will be claimed. If he goes unclaimed, he will remain with the Rays as non-roster depth.
