Rays' Owner Envisions Higher Payroll with New Stadium
The Tampa Bay Rays' ownership is optimistic about increasing the team's payroll significantly once their new stadium opens. The City of Tampa and Hillsborough County recently approved a $2.3 billion mixed-use development near Hillsborough College, which is expected to support the Rays' financial growth.
New majority owner Patrick Zalupski expressed confidence that the team could reach a payroll ranking within the top 15, or even top 10, in Major League Baseball. Currently, the Rays rank 26th in cash payroll, with $98.5 million allocated for 2026. The team has only $25.5 million guaranteed for the following year, indicating substantial room for growth.
While Zalupski's comments suggest a commitment to increased spending, the actual implementation may depend on future collective bargaining agreements and the team's performance. The Rays have historically operated on a lower budget, and it remains uncertain how quickly they will ramp up payroll in the coming years.
