Rays Place Garrett Cleavinger on Injured List, Select Ty Johnson
The Tampa Bay Rays have made three roster changes, including placing left-hander Garrett Cleavinger on the 15-day injured list because of left forearm tightness. Right-hander Ty Johnson has been called up from Triple-A Durham to take Cleavinger's place on the active roster, while infielder Oliver Dunn has been designated for assignment to accommodate Johnson on the 40-man roster.
Cleavinger pitched in the Rays' recent victory over the Rangers but struggled, failing to retire any of the three batters he faced. His performance raised concerns about his forearm issue, which could affect his availability for the remainder of the season. The Rays are expected to proceed cautiously with his recovery, especially since forearm tightness can indicate potential UCL injuries.
This marks a challenging time for the Rays, who have now placed three pitchers on the injured list within two days, including Shane McClanahan and Manuel Rodriguez. Despite these setbacks, Cole Sulser has returned from the injured list, and Griffin Jax was activated earlier in the week. Dunn, who had limited success with the Rays, may attract interest from other teams as a utility infielder if he clears waivers.
