Red Sox Awarded Run After Controversial Play Against Blue Jays

The incident occurred when Ceddanne Rafaela hit a fly ball, leading to confusion among the baserunners who acted as if there were two outs.

After the Blue Jays' center fielder caught the ball and doubled off a runner at first base, the umpires engaged in a discussion that resulted in a rules check with New York. Crew chief Chris Guccione announced that the run would count because the appeal for the third out was not made before the defensive team left the field.

Guccione clarified that the play was a time play, meaning the run counted since the runner crossed home plate before the out was recorded. The Blue Jays could have negated the run with a timely appeal at third base, but they left the field without making that appeal, leading to the final decision that allowed the run to stand.
