Red Sox Players Injured, Rehab Assignments Underway
The Boston Red Sox announced injuries to two players ahead of their game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Designated hitter Masataka Yoshida has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain, while right-handed reliever Justin Slaten is on the 15-day IL with right elbow inflammation, retroactive to August 13.
Yoshida sustained his injury during a game against the Pirates, where he tweaked his hamstring while attempting to reach second base. His recovery timeline remains uncertain, but minor strains typically require a couple of weeks, which could impact his availability for the remainder of the season. This season, Yoshida has a batting average of .274 with five home runs over 297 plate appearances.
Slaten will consult a doctor regarding his elbow issue but has indicated that he has previously managed similar discomfort. He has pitched 31 1/3 innings this season, with a 4.60 ERA, although his underlying metrics suggest better performance. In response to these injuries, the Red Sox recalled Mickey Gasper and Raymond Burgos from Triple-A Worcester. Additionally, Trevor Story, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Roman Anthony are starting rehab assignments, aiming to return from their respective injuries.
