Red Sox Re-Sign Angel Bastardo to Minor League Contract
The Boston Red Sox have re-signed reliever Angel Bastardo to a minor league contract, which includes an invitation to participate in big league camp. This decision comes as Bastardo was set to qualify for minor league free agency soon.
Bastardo, a 24-year-old right-handed pitcher from Venezuela, has been part of affiliated baseball since 2018. He initially signed with a $35,000 bonus and rose to become a near top 30 prospect in the Red Sox system. However, his progress was interrupted by Tommy John surgery in 2024, leading to his exclusion from the 40-man roster during the Rule 5 draft. The Toronto Blue Jays selected him but kept him on the injured list for the entire 2025 season.
During Spring Training, Bastardo competed for a bullpen spot as a Rule 5 selection but was ultimately returned to the Red Sox after not performing as well as teammate Spencer Miles. He then played for Triple-A Worcester, making 40 appearances with a 4.64 ERA, striking out 32% of batters faced while walking 14.3%. Bastardo will aim to secure a position in the relief group next spring under Chad Tracy.
