Red Sox Release Joe La Sorsa from Roster
The Boston Red Sox have announced the release of left-handed pitcher Joe La Sorsa, which reduces their roster from 39 to 38 players. La Sorsa will become a free agent once he clears release waivers.
La Sorsa, 28, started the season with the Pittsburgh Pirates on a minor league contract and later triggered an upward mobility clause, which allows players to be offered to other teams. After no team claimed him, he remained with the Pirates until the Red Sox acquired him in a cash deal. He made one appearance for Boston on June 7, where he allowed a home run and struck out a batter before being optioned to the minors.
After making six appearances in Triple-A, La Sorsa was placed on the minor league injured list due to a concussion at the end of June. His future status remains uncertain, and the Red Sox may have opted for the roster spot as he was in his final option year. La Sorsa has a major league record of 57 1/3 innings with a 5.34 earned run average, but he has performed better in Triple-A, posting a 2.79 ERA over 170 2/3 innings.
