Red Sox Sign Catcher Riley Adams to Minor League Contract
The Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement with catcher Riley Adams on a minor league contract, as reported by 7News in Boston. Adams is expected to join the team as a non-roster player for spring training.
Adams, who is 30 years old, spent the previous season with the Washington Nationals' Triple-A team, where he recorded a batting average of .273 with 16 home runs over 324 plate appearances. After being removed from the Nationals' 40-man roster in January, he became a minor league free agent.
Throughout his career, Adams has played parts of five seasons in Major League Baseball, primarily with Washington. While he has demonstrated raw power, his major league batting average stands at .211. The Red Sox view Adams primarily as depth, having acquired Adley Rutschman and with Connor Wong and Mickey Gasper also available as backup catchers.
