Red Sox Sign Morgan McSweeney to Minor League Contract

The Boston Red Sox have signed free-agent right-hander Morgan McSweeney to a minor league contract. This signing occurred on Wednesday, shortly after McSweeney's difficult debut with Double-A Portland, where he allowed five earned runs on five hits over two innings.

Prior to joining the Red Sox, McSweeney played in the Chinese Professional Baseball League, making nine appearances for the Rakuten Monkeys. He had a 5.08 ERA during that stint before being released in June. A native of Hudson, Massachusetts, McSweeney was drafted by the Orioles in 2019 and has spent time in various leagues, including independent baseball.

After his recent performance, McSweeney's career minor league statistics include a 3.77 ERA with 237 strikeouts across 151 appearances. At 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, he features a fastball that has reached 93 mph, along with several other pitches. The Red Sox aim to bolster their pitching depth with this addition, marking McSweeney as the third pitcher signed to a minor league contract in the past week.
