Red Sox Trade Tsung-Che Cheng to Tigers for Cash
The Boston Red Sox have completed a trade, sending infielder Tsung-Che Cheng to the Detroit Tigers for cash. This move was reported by Andrew Parker of Sox Prospects.
Cheng will take a position on Detroit's 40-man roster, which may vary between 42 and 44 players depending on decisions regarding Drew Anderson and Kenley Jansen. Boston had already made room on their roster by trading Nate Eaton to the Athletics earlier in the day.
Cheng, who is 25 years old, joined the Red Sox after being claimed off waivers from the Nationals in February. He had a brief stint with the Pirates last year and played 13 games at shortstop for Boston, hitting .256 with one double in 44 plate appearances. Most of his season was spent in Triple-A Worcester, where he achieved a .241/.345/.390 batting line with eight home runs. Cheng is recognized for his plate discipline and defensive skills, and he will compete for a bench role in Detroit if he remains on the 40-man roster through the offseason.
