Removal of Radio City Logo from Liverpool's St Johns Beacon Proposed
The Radio City 96.7 logo, a fixture on Liverpool's St Johns Beacon for over 25 years, is set to be removed following a planning application submitted to Liverpool City Council.
The logo was installed in 2000 when the local radio station operated from the 450ft tower, which has been vacant since the station's relocation and rebranding to Hits Radio in 2024. If the application is approved, the logo will be replaced with a new animated LED screen intended to enhance the visual appeal of the signage.
St Johns Beacon, originally built as a ventilation flue for a heating system, remains the tallest structure in Liverpool when including its antenna. A heritage statement accompanying the application argues that the current signage misrepresents the building's identity, as it advertises a business that no longer occupies the site. No additional modifications to the tower are planned, and a date for the planning committee's decision has yet to be announced.
