Repairs Begin on Southport Pier Following Safety Closure

Repairs to the steelwork of Southport Pier are commencing this month, marking a significant milestone in the restoration of the Victorian structure, which has been closed since 2022 due to safety concerns.

The UK government allocated £20 million for the project, which includes replacing decking boards, timber joists, and extensive steelwork repairs. Sefton Council leader Marion Atkinson emphasized the importance of this progress for the pier's restoration.

The Grade II-listed pier, which opened in 1860 and is the oldest pleasure pier in the UK, stretches 1.1 kilometers into the Irish Sea. Previous repairs were conducted in 2018 to address corrosion, but the pier was shut in December 2022 for health and safety reasons. The current restoration will involve the removal of 27 lighting arches and the restoration of kiosks and other structures.
