Report Highlights Financial Risks in English Football
A recent report from the independent football regulator indicates that English football is facing significant financial challenges, with most clubs operating on the brink of financial disaster. The report reveals that 94% of clubs are currently losing money, and over 60% of clubs in the EFL and National League are technically insolvent.
The regulator warns of a precarious situation characterized by rising debt and excessive reliance on owner funding, which puts clubs and their supporters at risk. The report, titled 'State of the Game', highlights that 17 clubs would still be unprofitable even if players did not receive salaries, and 66% of clubs could not sustain operations for more than 90 days without new funding.
Furthermore, the report emphasizes the urgent need for reform in the financial structure of English football, as many clubs lack proper business plans and contingency measures. The independent regulator has called for immediate action to address these financial vulnerabilities, particularly as the gap between the Premier League and lower leagues continues to widen.
